Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary
There are many reasons why a tooth extraction might be necessary. It can be an effective way to address dental overcrowding, for example, or prevent an impacted wisdom tooth from damaging nearby bone (“impacted” means the tooth is fully or partially trapped below the gumline). An infected tooth that can’t be salvaged with a root canal, meanwhile, risks spreading the infection throughout the mouth and is often painful.
A tooth extraction isn’t exactly “ideal,” but it will enable you to restore your oral health – and eliminate the source of your pain in the process.
The Process of Removing a Tooth
Removing a troubled tooth is fairly straightforward. One of our skilled periodontists will first administer a local anesthetic to the treatment area, ensuring your mouth will be numb during your extraction. We can also provide IV sedation for those with dental anxiety or sensitivities.
From there, our periodontist will either perform a simple extraction or surgical extraction, depending on your needs. A simple extraction involves using a special dental instrument to gently wiggle the tooth back and forth until it comes loose. For a surgical extraction, our periodontist will make an incision in the gumline so they can safely access and remove your tooth. They’ll likely also have to cut the tooth into smaller pieces, which makes the extraction easier on the jawbone.
Tooth Extraction Aftercare
It’s important to make sure you have reliable transportation to and from our office, as you’ll likely be groggy from the anesthetic and unable to drive. When you return home, try to avoid eating while your mouth is still numb. Otherwise, you could accidentally bite your soft oral tissue and cause irritation.
Soreness and mild bleeding is considered normal after tooth extraction. You can take over-the-counter or prescribed pain relievers as necessary to address discomfort, and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce any swelling. We also recommend sticking to a soft food diet until the soreness dissipates.
Finally, continue to brush and floss your teeth, being extra careful near your treatment area. Once your gums and jawbone are fully healed, we can discuss replacing your tooth with a dental implant restoration. Rest assured, you can enjoy a normal life after tooth extraction!
